A Christian Minister’s Conversion to Islam pt 1

Dr. Gerald Dirks, a former ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, began preaching at just 14 years old. After decades of studying Christianity at the highest academic levels, he made a decision that shocked everyone who knew him: he accepted Islam. In this first part of his story, he shares the journey that took him from a small Kansas town to the halls of Harvard, and ultimately away from the pulpit.

A Lifetime in the Church

Growing up in a small rural Kansas community of about 500 people, the church was the center of everything. Dr. Dirks collected perfect attendance pins from Sunday school, won awards for memorizing Biblical verses, and by junior high was already considering the ministry as his personal calling. By 14, he was selected to deliver sermons on Youth Sunday and soon began preaching at churches, nursing homes, and various church organizations across the region.

“By age 17, I entered Harvard College as an undergraduate with a philosophy major. In 1969, I received my license to preach. In 1972, I was ordained a deacon in the United Methodist Church. In 1974, I graduated with a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School.”

The Crisis of Knowledge

  • A study by Psychology Today found that ordained clergy believed in only about 4 out of 10 fundamental Christian beliefs, compared to 7 out of 10 among laypeople
  • The more deeply one studies Christian theology at the academic level, the more contradictions and difficulties emerge
  • Many ministers and scholars privately reject core doctrines like the divinity of Christ but continue serving in their positions
  • Dr. Dirks describes this widespread phenomenon as “atypical Christianity,” far more common among educated clergy than most people realize

From the Pulpit to “Atypical” Christianity

After graduating from Harvard Divinity School and spending a summer as an interim minister, Dr. Dirks left the parish ministry in the fall of 1974. He entered a period he describes as being an “atypical Christian,” someone who maintained a Christian identity while harboring serious doubts about fundamental doctrines. This phase would last for years before his eventual encounter with Islam.

“There are a lot of atypical Christians out there, probably more among the ordained clergy than among the laity, because the ordained clergy has been exposed to at least some of this information.”

What Comes Next

  • Dr. Dirks is the author of multiple books including “The Cross and the Crescent,” “Easy to Understand Islam,” and “Letters to My Elders in Islam”
  • His journey from Christianity to Islam was built on decades of rigorous academic study, not emotion
  • The full story of how he accepted Islam continues in Part 2
  • His experience demonstrates that sincere scholarship, when pursued honestly, can lead to the truth of pure monotheism
