Living as a Muslim in the modern world comes with a unique challenge: maintaining genuine trust in Allah when everything around us encourages trust in money, government, and material comfort instead. This powerful reminder forces us to honestly examine where our real dependence lies.
Where Is Our Trust Really Placed?
For many Muslims living in the West, our trust is not truly in Allah. It is in the paycheck, the government safety net, and the comfortable lifestyle we have grown accustomed to. Compare this with Muslims living through hardship in places like Syria, whose trust in Allah is real and tested daily.
“Our trust is not in Allah. Our trust is in the dollar, in the government. Us living in the West, we wouldn’t have a clue what trust really means.”
When Calamity Strikes, We Remember
The pattern is all too familiar. We cruise through life comfortably, and the only time we truly call upon Allah is when disaster hits. But the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) endured unimaginable trials:
- They were sawn in half and had their insides raked with metal combs, yet never abandoned their faith
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) told them: “There were people before you who endured far worse, and it did not put them off their religion”
- Yet today, we face minor tests and our prayer slips away, our hijab comes off, our commitment weakens
“We are losing our souls because we have too much. We are losing ourselves because we have too much.”
The abundance and comfort that surround us are not blessings if they pull us away from Allah. Every Muslim must honestly assess whether their ease is bringing them closer to their Creator or slowly eroding the faith that gives life its true meaning.
