John Patterson was a harsh Islamophobe who absorbed every talking point from career Islamophobes — the people who make their living from manufacturing fear and spreading misinformation about Islam. He believed Muslims wanted to destroy freedom, take over America, and kill non-believers. Then something shifted: he realized there had to be another side to the story. He looked into Islam for himself, and what he found was so different from the propaganda that he took his shahada and is now sharing his story on The Deen Show.
From Islamophobe to Muslim
John’s transformation is a powerful testament to what happens when a person moves from consuming propaganda to doing actual research. The career politicians and media figures who told him “Islam hates us” and “they want to take our freedoms” were profiting from his ignorance and fear. When he took the time to read the Quran, visit a mosque, and speak with actual Muslims, every lie he had been told crumbled. The Islam he discovered was one of peace, submission to God, clear moral guidance, and a community that welcomed him without condition.
A lot of my hatred was due to ignorance and fear of what I was told by career politicians saying Islam hates us, they want to kill us, they want to take our freedoms. When I actually looked into it, everything was different.
What Changed His Mind
- John went from consuming Islamophobic media to independently researching Islam — and found the propaganda was the complete opposite of reality
- Meeting actual Muslims and visiting a mosque showed him a community of warmth, generosity, and genuine faith
- He recognized that the career Islamophobes were capitalizing on people’s ignorance for profit, not seeking truth
- His story is a direct challenge to every person who holds negative views about Islam based solely on media consumption
I looked into Islam and now I’m here. There’s got to be more to the story, there’s got to be another side — and when I found it, I took my shahada.
