"So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." {Surah Al Maaidah: 74} A...

Repentance (Tawbah)

Repentance (Tawbah) is not just a recommendation in Islam — it is an obligation upon every believer. Yet many Muslims go entire days without making a single act of repentance, even though the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself repented to Allah seventy times every single day. This lecture addresses common misconceptions about Tawbah and provides a practical guide to making repentance a daily habit.

What Is Tawbah and How Do You Do It?

Tawbah is simple at its core: it means to sincerely regret what you have done, to commit to not doing it again, and to stop the sin if you are currently engaged in it. You can make Tawbah by declaring it with your tongue — “O Allah, I repent to You” — or silently in your heart. Whether you are driving, working, or lying in bed, you can pause and turn to Allah in repentance at any moment. The key is sincerity and a genuine commitment to change.

“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Seek Allah’s forgiveness, for I repent to Him seventy times every day.'” — If the best of creation repented this often, how much more do we need to?

Common Misconceptions About Repentance

Many Muslims mistakenly believe that Tawbah is optional — something nice to do but not required. This is incorrect. Allah commands all believers to repent: “Turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you may be successful” (Quran 24:31). Another misconception is that you cannot advise others to stop sinning if you yourself are guilty of the same sin. In reality, Allah commands us to enjoin good and forbid evil regardless of our own shortcomings — just be honest and humble about your own struggles rather than pretending to be perfect.

“Allah commanded us to enjoin good and forbid evil, even though He knows we are sinners. The devil wants you to say ‘who am I to advise others?’ — do not fall for that trap.” — Encourage good even while struggling yourself.

A Practical Daily Repentance Routine

  • Before going to sleep each night, ask yourself: how many times did I repent to Allah today?
  • If the answer is none, repent right then — recall specific sins and ask Allah’s forgiveness for each one individually
  • While driving, working, or during any quiet moment, pause and make Tawbah in your heart
  • If you wronged another person, seek their forgiveness in addition to repenting to Allah
  • Never despair of Allah’s mercy — no matter how many times you fall, keep turning back to Him

Allah loves the one who repents. He does not just forgive — He draws closer to the repentant servant and strengthens their faith. Make Tawbah a daily practice, not a once-in-a-lifetime event. Repent before you sleep, repent when you wake, and repent every time you stumble. That is the path to becoming a stronger believer and earning the love of your Creator.
