Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 17

This episode of the Seerah series covers a pivotal chapter in early Islamic history — the Muslim emigration to Abyssinia and the strategic wisdom of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in maintaining a “Plan B” for the Muslim community. It also explores the story of Abu Bakr’s attempted emigration, his protection by Ibn al-Dughunnah, and the marriage of Umm Habibah to the Prophet while she was still in Abyssinia.

Why the Muslims Remained in Abyssinia Even After Madinah

One of the most fascinating insights from this period is that the Muslims of Abyssinia remained there for over a decade — even after the Prophet’s migration to Madinah, and even after the battles of Badr, Uhud, and Khandaq. It was only after the Battle of Khaybar, when all immediate threats around Madinah had been neutralized, that the Prophet sent word for Ja’far ibn Abi Talib to bring the Muslims home. This reveals the Prophet’s remarkable long-term strategic thinking: Abyssinia served as a backup plan in case Madinah did not work out as a permanent base for the Muslim community.

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not just relying on divine help alone — he was tying his camel. He planned, he thought ahead, and he kept Abyssinia as a safety net until Madinah was 100% secure. This is a timeless lesson in combining trust in Allah with practical preparation.”

Abu Bakr’s Protection and the Power of Public Worship

  • Abu Bakr initially set out to emigrate to Abyssinia but was intercepted by Ibn al-Dughunnah, a tribal chief who offered him personal protection — similar to one nation granting diplomatic immunity to a citizen of another
  • The Quraysh accepted this protection on one condition: Abu Bakr could not pray publicly, because his emotional recitation of the Quran was so moving that it was attracting their women and children to Islam
  • When Abu Bakr eventually chose to pray openly and return Ibn al-Dughunnah’s protection, he demonstrated that no worldly security is worth compromising the open practice of one’s faith
  • Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan became a widow in Abyssinia and the Prophet sent her a marriage proposal through the Najashi (the Christian king), who personally arranged and gifted the mahr — a beautiful example of cross-faith cooperation

“Someone like Abu Bakr does not deserve to leave the land of Makkah,” said Ibn al-Dughunnah. Even non-Muslims recognized the noble character of the early believers — a testament to how Islam transforms individuals into people of honor and integrity.

This chapter of the Seerah teaches us that faith requires both spiritual reliance on Allah and intelligent worldly planning. The early Muslims endured exile, separation, and hardship, yet their patience and strategic wisdom laid the groundwork for the establishment of a civilization that would transform the world.
