Find out about one of the greatest wrestling matches that ever took place.

The Greatest Wrestler ﷺ

Most people know the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a spiritual leader, a statesman, and a mercy to all of creation. But few know that he was also the greatest wrestler of his time. In this fascinating narration, we learn about the epic encounter between the Prophet and Rukana, the undefeated wrestling champion of Makkah, and how a physical contest became a doorway to the most important truth in the universe.

Three Body Slams and a Shahada

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) approached Rukana in the marketplace to share the message of Islam, Rukana made a bold challenge: if Muhammad could beat him in wrestling, he would sit down and listen. What happened next shocked everyone present. The Prophet grabbed Rukana, lifted him up, and body-slammed him to the ground. Rukana, who had never been put on his back by any man, was stunned. He demanded a rematch. The Prophet slammed him a second time. Then a third. Each time, Rukana was left breathless and bewildered.

Rukana said: “Nobody has ever beaten me before. You body-slammed me three times. I don’t understand what’s going on.” The Prophet then told him something even more amazing: “Believe in Allah. There is no one worthy of worship but Allah, and I, Muhammad, am the messenger of Allah.” Rukana accepted Islam on the spot.

The Dawah Lesson in This Story

  • The Prophet accommodated people and met them where they were; with a wrestler, he wrestled
  • Effective dawah requires wisdom, not just preaching; the Quran says: “Invite to the path of your Lord with wisdom and a beautiful reminder”
  • Getting on someone’s level, being real, and connecting as a human being is more effective than launching into a lecture
  • The Prophet’s physical strength was a sign from Allah, but it was his character and truthfulness that sealed the conversion

The Quran says: “Invite to the path of your Lord with wisdom and with a beautiful reminder.” The Prophet did not just preach at people. He connected with them, worked with them, and spoke their language. That is the formula for sharing Islam effectively.

This story is not just an entertaining historical anecdote; it carries a profound lesson for every Muslim who wants to share the message of Islam. Do not approach dawah with a one-size-fits-all mentality. Get to know people, understand their world, and find the point of connection that opens their heart. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the ultimate embodiment of this wisdom, and the results speak for themselves: a wrestling champion walked into the marketplace that day as a disbeliever and walked out as a Muslim.
