The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned that his Ummah would divide into 73 sects, all destined for the Hellfire except one — the group that follows the Quran and Sunnah as understood by the Prophet and his companions. In this insightful lecture, Brother Assim Al-Hakeem explains what it truly means to be on the middle path, why extremes on either side are dangerous, and how every Muslim can ensure they belong to the saved group.
What Does It Mean to Be a Balanced Muslim?
Allah praised this Ummah in the Quran by saying, “Thus We have made you a just, balanced nation.” Being balanced means caring for both your body and your soul, fulfilling your worldly responsibilities while never neglecting your spiritual obligations. The companion Hanzalah feared he had become a hypocrite because the spiritual intensity he felt in the presence of the Prophet would diminish when he returned to his family. The Prophet (peace be upon him) reassured him that there is a time for worship and a time for the world — but the key is never to let the worldly pull you completely away from Allah.
“If you are in the center of a circle and fire consumes the edges, the last place it will reach is the center. By being on the middle path, you protect yourself from the calamities that destroy those at the extremes.” — Assim Al-Hakeem
How to Stay on the Straight Path
- Measure everything against the Quran and Sunnah — not cultural traditions, popular opinions, or personal desires
- Avoid both religious extremism and negligence — Islam demands neither monasticism nor hedonism, but a balanced commitment to worship, family, work, and community
- Test every religion with the acid test of logic and evidence — only Islam will stand scrutiny as a complete, rational, and consistent way of life
- Life is short — the years that have passed will never return, so identify the correct path now and commit to it with sincerity before it is too late
“Ibn Mas’ud, the great companion who took more than seventy chapters of the Quran directly from the Prophet’s mouth, said: ‘The Jama’ah is whatever corresponds to truth, even if it means you stand alone.’ At the time of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), he alone was the Jama’ah while the entire world stood against him.”
Islam is the only way of life that addresses every dimension of human existence — spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social — in perfect balance. Do not be deceived by numbers or popularity. Seek the truth, hold firm to the Quran and Sunnah, and ask Allah to keep you steadfast upon the straight path until you meet Him on the Day of Judgment.
